By now, you probably know the story behind "Snakes On A Plane." Months before this movie was released, the buzz was audible. As we move closer to its theatrical debut, it is roaring. Promising to be perhaps the cheesiest movie of the decade, "SoaP" has already received huge coverage in media outlets ranging from "Entertainment Weekly" to multiple features/mentions on NPR. Blogs have been all over this movie for months, influencing the film makers to tweak this movie, make it R-rated, and other modifications.
In its pre-release mode, this movie has already gone from obscure to cult to mass appeal – and it’s not out until August 18th. Perhaps like "Rocky Horror," it’s going to quickly become one of those movies that you either love or hate – but millions will want to see it. Despite how bad it will most likely be, you can see that even with all the hype, this film is going to become a summer blockbuster.
Perhaps looking back at "SoaP" (which could also become a pop culture catch phrase like "Where’s The Beef?" or "Shit Happens") will become one of those projects that generates books ("How They Did It") and at the very least, theses or dissertations will be written in film/marketing/advertising classes. Like the Howard Dean campaign, Internet observers will study the techniques used to hype a movie that had no pedigree or prequel (like "Pirates," X-Men, Superman, or even "A Prairie Home Companion").
More and more, it’s looking like the viral quality of "SoaP" kind of happened, with New Line being smart enough to get the hell out of the way, let consumers blog their brains out, and start re-working their profitability estimates. As much as this film may actually suck, it’s looking like the buzz will propel it to a huge summer success.
