A new study shows that about one-third of big companies in the U.S. and the U.K. hire employees to read company emails. They say they’re guarding against various risks in the process, but the bottom line is that most employees have no clue this is going on.
Yet, you’d be surprised at the number of emails that we receive here from industry people – sent on a company email account – that says things like "Get me out of here" or "Can I throw my hat in the ring for that Dubuque job?" or "The (GM) just did something that will tube the spring book."
We don’t return those emails. If a response is appropriate, we use a personal email account, or simply pick up the phone. When we mention that there is indeed a possibility that email could be monitored, we often get a perplexed response… Or indignation that the company would do this in the first place.
Hey, it’s their servers, it’s their computers, it’s their offices. They can do whatever they want. As technology races forward, we all have to think logically, learn on the fly, and use our heads.
