If you’ve seen this video below, then maybe it’s time to move on to Mark or Jerry’s blog today. Or just take the day off.
But if not, you’re in for a treat as guitarist Alex Chadwick of the Chicago Music Exchange presents 12+ minutes of some of the greatest rock guitar riffs of all time – 100 of them, in fact.
While it appears to be just one take, Alex admitted to MSNBC that this feat wasn’t continuous, but it is impressive. That’s a 1958 Fender Strat, and for anyone who’s ever picked up a guitar, Chadwick will make you feel a little less adequate.
But these 12 minutes will make you feel good, and it’s SFW – especially if you’re an employee of a Rock station. So play it loud, and think about Alex’s selections, your format, what’s included, what’s missing, and how focused your station is – or isn’t.
It was interesting to me that more than half of these great riffs come from songs that are staples at most Classic Rock stations. And Alex’s choices from the past decade may also surprise you. Not many of the bands that have earned airplay at Mainstream/Active stations over these last ten years are represented here – maybe for good reason.

Rock radio has had its share of critics and detractors over the past few years. The rush to spoken word radio and the onslaught of personalized, customized, commercial-free music channels, digital music platforms, YouTube, and iPods have made it more challenging to navigate changing waters. To me, this video reinforces the power and energy of the music, and the ability to find new, innovative, and refreshing ways to present it, talk about it, and appreciate it.

Maybe it’s already been said, but shouldn’t “Pictures of Matchstick Men” be Status Quo? I have time to notice stuff like this :). Hello Fred.
