With apologies to MTV and the Buggles, a new study shows the importance of video streaming in the Internet world – among Boomers. A new study by the NPD Group shows that a majority (61%) of Boomers web users have streamed video.
Leo Laporte said the same thing during our recent Summit and NAB sessions (streaming video of the former, and our "60 Digital Ideas in 60 Minutes" presented at the NAB are both available on our website).
Look at many radio stations sites. Where are the video applications? What are radio personalities providing listeners in terms of their own videos or even videos they find elsewhere? The proliferation of hi-speed Internet and the growth of YouTube have facilitated this astounding growth.
Alternative and Active stations "get" it, but Classic Rock stations are often slow to understand the opportunity. This NPD Group study, along with our own Tech Poll from earlier this year, underscores the need to make video a key part of a station’s Internet offerings.
We’re in the entertainment business. While radio has been forever known as "theater of the mind," it’s time for the industry to grasp the rapidly rising importance of video in the entertainment mix.

hey jacob, tesa from kyte here.
great observations!
to your point about radio adoption of video applications, i do see a lot of stations launching with online video. major radio station networks have definitely recognized the significance of online video…and many are utilizing kyte’s platform to power their efforts.
major stations around the country – including LA’s KCRW, power 106, KROQ; NYC’s z100, san francisco’s KMEL – have all utilized kyte’s technology to bring a face to radio, and drive their terrestrial radio audiences online.
they have used kyte to produce and broadcast videos (including live) for their in-studio events, live remotes, concerts, etc; promote user-generated video contests; distribute this content virally across the web; and much more…which resulted in increased engagement from their listeners.
