I started with this question as I opened “Must See Video,” a panel I moderated at the 2012 Morning Show Boot Camp:
“Why are we talking video at a radio conference?”
And of course the truth is that video is the radio star. For Boot Camp attendees who grew up with the mantra, “theatre of the mind,” we had a great crowd on hand to learn all about how video can be applied to radio shows.
After a review of Techsurvey8 – especially the big finding that nearly six in ten radio listeners stream video weekly, but relatively few visit station websites to access them – we got down to business.
It started with a great conversation with Steelboy’s Dirk Freeman, a guy who’s had experience in radio, TV, and design, and who knows the equipment and the production values that stations need in order to be successful in this space. And Comrex DOS Chris Crump brought his perspective as a radio production pro who is now watching his company make the transition from radio to video.
From Don Imus broadcasting his WFAN morning show on MSNBC back in the ‘90s to Howard Stern on E!, the foundation has been laid for radio stars to broaden their appeal and strengthen their audience’s enthusiasm with great video.
We played back some station-generated examples, including this parody video from Mega 107.5. Shoboy (pictured) was on hand at the session to add perspective about how the station is able to monetize their visual efforts.

But because I was so fixated on keeping the panel moving along, taking questions, cueing up videos, and staying on time, I missed something important right in front of my eyes.
“Mr. Video” himself – Art Vuolo – was in the room videotaping the session.
As always.
Chris, Dirk, and I were talking before the room filled up about what will become of the cataloging of radio’s visual history when Art finally hangs up his headphones and turns off his camera.
Radio needs a “best friend,” and someone who is unconditionally passionate about this medium who can bring it to life using visuals.
So thanks, Art, for being there last week, at hundreds of conventions and conferences, and at radio stations across America.
And thanks to Don Anthony, who had the vision to put the session together, and to all of you who made it out to Morning Show Boot Camp.
See you on the radio.
