Here’s an interesting stat that is very likely a predictor of the future here in the U.S. – 20% of music sales in Japan are now being sold over cell phones. This includes everything from songs to ringtones. Since launching this service less than one year ago, KDDI (the #2 cell phone company in Japan) reports selling 17 million songs.
And of course, Steve Jobs saw this coming, because in Japan, buying music via cell phones has passed PC downloads. Maybe he also noticed that buying a song via the phone in Japan can run as high as $3.60 per song. Our math tells us that’s better than 99 cents a song…
