The blog you’re reading now is nearly 18 months old, and despite some misgivings I had when it first started, it’s been one of the most interesting things I’ve ever done. I decided early on that, without fail, we would post at least one entry each weekday. We have not failed to achieve this goal, and the substance of our posts, I believe, has been generally worthwhile.
Our industry is changing rapidly, and a running commentary on everything from PPM to HD to iPods to XM has helped us communicate our thinking, as well as keep our clients, friends, and any other interested parties in touch with how we see the world. During these crazy times, we cannot sit on our hands and ignore the goings-on. Our blog forces us to confront important issues, and provide a forum for those who wish to comment on the travails terrestrial radio is enduring.
In a recent New York Times article comes a reports that of all the Fortune 500 companies, only one has a CEO-written blog, Sun Microsystems’ Jonathan Schwartz.
Blogs at their best are about transparency. They’re about giving readers, customers, and yes, even stockholders a look at the inner-workings of a company or an organization. And of course, they’re about communication – letting interested readers know about what’s going on inside the company and the industry.
At our upcoming Summit 11 in Dallas on September 19-20, we’re pleased to have the blog expert, Jason Calacanis, on our agenda. Jason recently sold his wildly successful Weblogs, Inc. to AOL for a reported $25 million. Among other things, Jason will be speaking about how radio stations, PDs, and jocks can use blogs effectively.
But what of CEOs? At this intensely difficult time in our industry, when so much is at the crossroads, wouldn’t it be helpful, and even reassuring for some of our captains of industry to give us some insight into their thinking via a blog? It’s efficient, it’s communicative, it’s smart, and it would be a breath of much-needed fresh air.

While not exclusively CEO-written (I think Waggoner has only written one entry… this is more Bob Lutz’s baby), there’s a fellow Motor City business blog:
