The official release (finally) of Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy will stand out as one of the most annoyingly memorable events in recent years. Many PDs are more than likely fed up with Axl Rose, and the whole rigamarole this song/album has gone through.
But it’s an opportunity for a Mainstream/Active station to take advantage of the controversy. Like other releases that PDs "aren’t sure about" (Killers, Nickelback, etc.), here’s the chance to make some news today, play the song every hour, and let listeners use their thumbs – in this case, texting (or online polls) – to register their opinions. Let listeners comment on the song on your site, argue with each other, and for a change, go mix it up about a Rock Radio event.
This is something we heard Nikki Sixx preach at Summit 13 last month. Let the audience decide. And in the process, make a little noise for your station.
