Hats off to NAB President David Rehr, and his strong letter to U.S. Senators Patrick Leahy and Arlen Specter regarding Internet radio. Recognizing the importance of streaming audio to radio’s digital future, Rehr laid out five reforms for consideration.
In the letter, Rehr notes, "Broadcasters are concerned with the future and viability of Internet streaming of free over-the-air radio broadcasts. Internet streaming offers listeners an innovative and convenient way of accessing radio broadcasts, and it will be a significant source of entertainment, news, and information for our listeners as we move into the digital age. We are committed to securing the future of this new and growing platform for the distribution of free, locally oriented radio."
Rehr is correct in his assessment that radio’s Internet presence is a key to the industry’s survival and growth. As we’ve seen in survey after survey, radio broadcasters that do not have a secure place on the Internet will be left behind. We applaud him for aggressively stating radio’s case.
And I’m pleased to announce that NAB President David Rehr will be appearing at the Jacobs Media Summit on September 19-20 in Dallas. This is the first time an NAB President will speak to our group, and we are already preparing radio-oriented questions to help frame this important session.
