The Media Audit completed a survey that confirms another finding from the Jacobs Media Technology Web Poll – if you’re going to have angst about new media, satellite radio is the least of your worries. They sampled over 117,000 respondents and only 571 turned out to be XM or Sirius cumers (less than 1%). Our web poll among active Rock radio listeners showed that 7% are subscribers – a percentage that greatly trails everything – from iPod ownership to video game play.
According to Bob Jordan, President of International Demographics (who puts out The Media Audit), “We were surprised at how little market penetration has been achieved by satellite radio.”
That’s because they’ve done a great job of generating lots of great PR.
We’re not suggesting that satellite radio won’t become a more tangible threat in the future, but right now – today – we’re talking about a medium that is long on hype and short on subscribership. It’s good to be free and everywhere. Now let’s get going on the content.
