Few people through history seem to have had a greater grasp on effective leadership than legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. A few years back, we were proud to bring one of his players, Andy Hill, to the Jacobs Summit to talk about Coach Wooden – and tell some of the stories from his book, "Be Quick But Don’t Hurry." Now, Coach Wooden himself teaches his principles (along with co-author Steve Jamison) in a fascinating new book called, "Wooden on Leadership." The way you and I might jot "to do" lists, Coach Wooden takes notes about how to teach success. Fortunately, he has saved those priceless notebooks. Here are a few of Coach Wooden’s rules to lead by:
- "Be a friend, and still be professional."
- "Discipline yourself and others won’t need to."
- "Condition your team to love the struggle."
- "Beware of those who’ll do whatever it takes to win."
- "There is a time to be flexible and a time to be firm."
- "Control emotion, or emotion will control you."
- "Allow exceptions for exceptional results."
These gems and dozens of others are illustrated in full, because – as Coach would say – "A good demonstration tops a great description." Read the book. Give a copy to the other leaders in your organization, because "Good players share the ball."
