Apple’s new quarterly earnings report surprised many on Wall Street, as 6.1 million iPods were sold – a 16% increase quarter to quarter. Compared to a one year ago, iPods sales leapt 343%.
Jacobs Media clients couldn’t have been surprised. Our Tech Web Poll (conducted in late March/early April) indicated that 36% of those who hadn’t bought an iPod-like device yet planned to do so this year. At the time, we reported there was no question that iPods sales would explode in ’05. And that finding is coming true.
The iPod is the only mp3 player that matters, and it is changing the way consumers listen to music. More reason why radio cannot run from this cultural phenomenon. Our content can go anywhere – FM, the Internet, and yes, the iPod.

Guys,
Your poll is really interesting. I’ve began covering Apple in the Internet Stock Blog due to its increasing music business. There’s a quote up on the site from Apple’s conference call in which the CFO states that the iTunes Music Store became profitable this quarter. Two questions for you:
1. I’d really like to post the graphic showing the results of your poll, with a link back to your site. May I do this?
2. What are your views on Apple’s competitive position in online music sales? If you could leave some thougths on the conference call quote post on The Internet Stock Blog, I’d greatly value that and it should be free marketing for you. The post is here:

FYI: my readers are mainly coming at these issues from an investing perspective, but also include many people in the Internet industry.
Many thanks!
