What do you do when you really need to ring those cash registers?
Who do you call at crunch time?
When it really counts, who do you want on stage to entertain and enchant?
The Mt. Rushmore of Classic Rock.
As has been the case at most of the bigger benefits over the past several decades – from Live Aid to Farm Aid to No Nukes to the concert for 9/11, last night’s 12-12-12 benefit concert to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy played right into Classic Rock’s typecast role as the big draw and the big moneymaker.

The variety – or as we call it in the programming world – the tertiaries – was provided by Kanye West, Alicia Keys, and Chris Martin.
The powers – the big hits that you just don’t get tired of – were courtesy of what Mick Jagger referred to as “the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden.”
A highlight was Paul McCartney joining the Cobain-less Nirvana to perform.
I talk to Classic Rock sales staffs all the time. And so often, they express boredom and fatigue with the music.

The next time advertisers or buyers minimize the music, the format, or the genre, remind them that it’s as big as ever.
And it was proven once again last night on the world stage.
