Radio people know a great promotional tie-in when they see one. So tonight’s Jim Beam promotion with Uber in Chicago has to be one of the truly timely and clever campaigns of all time.
It works like this: For the Cubs-Indians World Series game tonight at Wrigley Field, 10,000 folks will be able to get a free ride home from Uber.
The Uber app will geo-located the phone locale to be sure it’s in the Wrigley zone. Up to $20 of the ride will be covered by Uber.
Talk about all the component parts: a traditional whisky brand, a startup digital ride service, and a baseball team that hasn’t played a World Series game in their home ballpark since 1945. Talk about being in the moment and capturing the zeitgeist of this historic game tonight.
AdAge reports that Jim Beam has put a great spin on the promotion with this statement:
“We take care of family and with a historic moment like this, we want to be sure that Chicago sports fans get home safely.”
Or more likely, arrive at a bar safely.
Brilliant.
