"Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations."
– Steve Jobs, 2009
So now we'll find out how Apple will handle complaints that holding the new iPhone 4 essentially cuts off or weakens its network connections. We have one of these new gadgets in the office that has exhibited some of these issues, and I sat next to a guy on an airplane Friday afternoon who demonstrated it for me.
Like Toyota and BP, even the biggest brands can get themselves into product and usage problems, and it's during these moments when you find out about leadership and their ability to read the room.
As mobile developers, I can tell you first-hand that the dynamics of this space are all about change, innovation, and unanticipated events. And given the fast pace of new platforms, operating systems, and the handset manufacturing, there are simply going to be occasional problems, speed bumps, and issues. It goes with the territory when change and innovation is almost an everyday occurrence.
Across the Internet, many contend that left-handed people are especially more likely to have "grip problems" with this new iPhone. Apparently, Steve Jobs' initial reactions to complaints was this advice: ''Just avoid holding it in that way.''
Lauren Milsom, of the Left-Handed Club – 90,000 members – isn't buying it. Her group calls it a ''design flaw," so we'll see how Apple goes about dealing with this issue and correcting it. If indeed it's an issue.
I'm also left-handed, and have had my share of frustration with classroom desks and scissors over the years. Hopefully, this new iPhone (which is on my list) won't be the next implement us lefties will find frustrating.
By the way, Bill Gates is left-handed. And many online forums are wondering about Steve Jobs' "handedness."
So, is this hubbub over the iPhone 4 the real thing or just something for the blogosphere and the many techie critics to blather about during a week when the only story in the news is Elena Kagan's hearings? Wonder if she's left-handed.
