Yesterday, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook and company got on stage in San Jose to talk about the company’s progress and to showcase their new products, specifically the iPad Mini.
These are highly anticipated events because Apple has become famous since the Steve Jobs era for dazzling the tech community – and all of America – with the next innovation that will be showing up in stores and impacting our lives.
This event didn’t disappoint. Cook and his minions made a number of pronouncements, and ZD Net’s Zack Whittaker culled through all the presentations and came up with some riveting Apple metrics, some of which appear below. These are mind-boggling numbers:
- 5 million iPhones sold in the first weekend alone, from its launch in September;
- 3 million iPods shipped since they were announced at the iPhone 5 launch;
- 200 million iOS devices running the latest version of iOS 6 mobile operating, in just one month since it was first released to the public. The “fastest software upgrade in history,” said Apple chief executive Tim Cook.
- 125 million Documents in the Cloud uploaded to iCloud in the past year since iCloud was first launched;
- 35 billion apps downloaded from the Apple App Store, with more than 700,000 apps on offer;
- $6.5 billion paid to Apple application developers paid since the App Store first went live;
- 6 years in which the Mac has outgrown the PC market;
- 100 million iPads sold in two-and-a-half years, as of early October;
- 91 percent of the tablet Web traffic are churned up by the iPad;
- 80 percent of iBooks are covered under the U.S. high school curriculum;
- 2,500 U.S. classrooms with iBooks textbooks;
- 94 percent of the Fortune 500 are testing or deploying the iPad.
All pretty powerful, right?
But perhaps the most impressive statement to come out of this event was from CEO Tim Cook in reference to the growth of iPad:
“We are not taking our foot off the gas.”
The metrics are incredible, but it is Apple’s drive, spirit, and desire to do great things and (gulp) change the world that should give us a sense of admiration. And inspriation. Apple has made some amazing contributions to the culture, the economy, education, and the business spirit, but perhaps none have been as important as thinking and acting big.
Don’t you wish every Fortune 500 company operated this way?
