Over this past weekend, a number of you asked me how it all went at Conclave, especially our third annual Summer School program. We opened Conclave first thing Wednesday morning to a packed house, attended by people who came to Minneapolis to learn and grow. When they started bringing in more chairs an hour later, we were feeling pretty good.
One thing about Conclave 37 is that the Twitter activity was markedly better than at most radio conferences I attend. From the very beginning, many people were “covering” these sessions, as well as adding their own content. It made for a running dialogue throughout Summer School and the panels and keynotes that ran throughout the three days.
So the best way to convey the attitude, vibe, and substance of our eight Summer School sessions is to let you read the tweets for yourself, as well as the varied group of “citizen journalists” who actively added their own commentary. We edited these Tweets, and I think you’ll find it fun and easy to follow.
First, the opening moments of Summer School 3:
First up was our social strategist, Lori Lewis, with insights into the Facebook philosophy, and how it impacts station brands:
Then it was “There’s An App For That,” featuring Paul Jacobs, the guy behind our jacAPPS division:
And the crowds grew…
Next up was music marketing impresario Michael Brandvold and “Tweet Like A Rock Star” – a great session that had the room buzzing… and tweeting:
Then we went Arbitronic with the insights of Jenny Tsao, who profiled the big winners from PPM and how they pulled it off:
I presented “Emotional Triggers,” a look at some of the broadcast radio insights from Techsurvey8 with some new format breakouts on why AM/FM is so appealing:
Coleman Insights’ Chris Ackerman talked about the balancing act of creating great brands and winning in PPM, a session that clearly defined the challenges and opportunities:
Lori Lewis returned with a fascinating look at social media – through the lens of the Department of Defense:
And last but not least, the Minnesota Twins’ head of corporate communications, Chris Iles, had a great presentation about how the team is using social media to engage with fans and generate revenue, even in a less-than-great season:
We’ve done a lot of these conferences, and this was the most seamless, best attended Summer School of the bunch. We appreciate the support and help of Conclave. It was an honor to start off this great event:
I would love to read your comments and reactions to this Tweet Fest. Thanks to everyone who attended, but most importantly, those who took the time to show the real-time power and entertainment value of Twitter.

I think Jennifer’s tweet (2nd one on the article) set the tone perfectly! It was fun to not only participate but to follow the conversation on Twitter for sessions that were concurrent the rest of the week.

Exactly, Jeff. It was like watching a TV show with the running commentary of Twitter in the background. It’s about the power of the real-time web, and crowd particiipation. Other conferences should follow suit. Thanks for the comment and the observation.

Thank you, Fred!
I truly believe that getting the crowd involved is thats what sets the Conclave apart from other conferences. I had an absolutely amazing time. Can’t wait for next years conference!
Fred Jacobs says
Congratulations, Jen. It IS that kind of conference, and we’re glad you were able to make the trip.
Jennifer Varan says
Thanks again, Fred! I’m glad I was able to as well. It was definitely worth every minute of that 20 hour drive =)
