As the tech-savvy world continues to dominate conversation, it’s easy to dismiss some of the time-honored promotional stunts that helped make radio a topic of conversation. Case in point? The stupid bet that DJs in competing markets would make around a World Series, Final 4, or the Stanley Cup. Why don’t these little promotional stunts happen much anymore? Because they’re simply over-done to a point where no one cares, right?
So, witness the "bet" that Donald Trump and Vince McMahon waged around "Wrestlemania." How many times did you hear people taking about it? How much video have you seen? How many more times will you see this image?
Why did this stunt work? Because it’s universal – two well-known celebrities using a sports contest as a backdrop to build their own fame and cache. And neither one rejected it because "it’s been done before."
