Around the Motor City, you say #6 to a middle-aged guy, and he thinks of Al Kaline, Detroit Tiger Hall of Famer who is commonly thought to be the best that team has ever produced.
Many don’t know Al’s son, Mark, who has risen to global media manager for Ford. At a recent radio forum, Kaline the younger keynoted, and hit a hard shot right up the middle of the radio folks in the room.
Kaline urged radio to get moving if it’s going to have a bright future. Suggesting possible deal-making with online companies, mobile, and perhaps even satellite radio, Kaline openly wondered what’s taking so long on the PPM front. As he posited, "Radio is snapping at the ants, while the elephants are going by."
In advice that warmed our hearts, Kaline tossed out a Neo-like observation when he reminded his audience not to "lose sight of the listener" as new technologies emerge.
But our favorite sound bite was "Get comfortable with being uncomfortable" – words that should go up on all of our walls as we machete our way through the new media wilderness. No doubt about it – this Kaline also made the most of this At Bat.
