This morning’s post is courtesy of 96rock/Raleigh PD Jay Nachlis who is involved in a great promotion with a local retailer. I thought you’d enjoy this story about how every once in a while, it all lines up and programming, sales, and the client create a win-win-win.
You’ve sat in a sales/promotions meeting so many times, the rhythm clicks in your head. Sales rep brings up client, finds out about the product, asks what the USP (unique selling proposition) is, spits out ideas. Repeat.
We’re so used to generating ideas for the client, it could be pretty easy to miss a good idea coming from the other direction.
96rock/Raleigh hosts the “96rock House Band” competition each spring, which is a twist on the standard “Battle of the Bands” template. Hearing this promotion gave the proprietor of a small recording studio – Ellington Studios in Angier, NC – a thought. Did any of the 96rock jocks play an instrument? He called the request lines and wrote a few e-mails and found out that in fact, none of the jocks could play anything. He claimed that with lessons at his studio, not only could he make us into a band, we would be playing Classic Rock songs within 30 days.
We talked about it amongst ourselves, but then didn’t follow up on it right away – in part, I think, because we thought he was joking. Then he posted a challenge to us on the station Facebook page and we decided it was worth at least investigating.
Deciding who would play what was easy – our night guy Adam-12 was the consummate “air drummer”. Midday jock Alli Morgan would grab the bass. And morning guys, Salt and Demetri, had the attitude for lead and rhythm guitar, and I, the karaoke connoisseur, would rock the mic.
Since then, we all took lessons once a week, mostly individually since our schedules are so different. Once a month, we jam together at the studio and on December 16th we’re playing a couple songs as part of a holiday concert at Campbell University.
96rock’s coffers will not be filled by a small recording studio located 40 minutes south of Raleigh. But:
- We have a new solution for the calls that inevitably come from clients looking for a cover band every few months. We’ll hire ourselves.
- We created web and Facebook content from which listeners can follow our progress.
- We found a great team-building activity that we all enjoy.
- A small local company is seeing his business grow.
Here’s our band after 30 days:
