OK, with baseball season approaching, you just have to expect some obvious analogies in this blog space. But, hey – good coaching is good coaching.
A case in point is Tigers manager Jim Leyland. As he settles into spring training, he has already set two very important priorities for his team: better hitting on two strike counts and better base running – in that order.
Now, this may seem simplistic, but by using basic goal-setting techniques, everyone on the team has a clear understanding of the manager’s expectations going into the season. While there will obviously be a lot of individualized coaching on many different levels, these two priorities are front-and-center to help improve the team’s overall performance.
Think about how this translates to aircheck meetings. So often, they cover the minutia, but perhaps lose sight of the overriding goals for the station. Going into the spring book, for example, think about how a programmer might set goals for improving teases going into breaks and doing better, more compelling recycling promos.
Individual aircheck sessions would still cover basic performance issues, but the BIG GOALS should be very top-of-mind for every member of the airstaff. They would be covered in every aircheck review. It’s smart to go into upcoming Arbitron surveys – or seasons – with big, boxcar expectations.
We’ll see how effective Leyland is at communicating his goals over the 2007 campaign. I have faith that the Tigers will certainly show improvement in these areas.
