We’ve put the wraps on our all-client Technology Web Poll (more than 50 participating stations and 19,000+ completed interviews). The research is rich with incredible findings about how Rockers use streaming audio, iPods, and videogames, along with opinions about satellite radio and other new media.
But the big finding that emerged from the study is the percentage of listeners that have become “cell phone only” consumers. You know people like this – and perhaps you’re one of them – who have dropped their land line service, and now use their cell phone for everything. Economically, it’s smart for many people. For those of us in radio, it’s a disaster. Arbitron does not survey these listeners, and has no plan in place to do so until 2006 at the earliest.
Most affected? Alternative fans and 18-29s (often one and the same), but other formats and demos are already feeling the pain. Arbitron is well aware of the problem, but research like this helps define its scope. If you share our concerns, contact your Arbitron rep or anyone else you interact with in their company, and let them know how you feel.
Radio is under attack from new media, but at least its key ratings company needs to get it right. All listeners need to be included, especially the life blood of every medium – the young audience.
