Behind every iconic rock band is usually a guiding force that can rise above the bombast, the egos, the infighting, and the insanity to help make great music and legendary artists. That was most certainly the case with the Beatles.
In the case of the greatest musical foursome of all time, their producer, mentor, and father figure – Sir George Martin – passed away the other day. Dubbed the “Fifth Beatle,” Martin was able to engineer and lead the Fab Four throughout their incredible arc all the way through the Abbey Road album. He was truly the Beatles’ “man behind the curtain” – the studio wizard who produced their amazing musical works.
Martin’s role in the careers of the Beatles is a reminder that all great talent requires coaching, guidance, and a deft touch. We love to celebrate great radio personalities in this blog – and deservedly so. But it is often programmers and managers who put these shows together, and wisely guide them through the bad books, the uncomfortable aircheck sessions, the handholding, and the psychological counseling that all goes into developing and growing great talent.
Maybe at the next “Morning Show Boot Camp,” they’ll set aside a session to showcase those amazing PDs who live and work “behind the curtain.” putting together and providing guidance for some of the greatest shows on the radio.
