At a time when everyone's preaching that "Content is king," but so many stations actions suggest the opposite, another gathering of the nation's talent is about to take place in Nashville next month.
It's the "Morning Show Boot Camp," put on by Don Anthony, the guy who's been Mr. Talent in radio for more than a couple of decades now. This year, MSBC comes of age – 21 years old, and going strong.
We're making the trek to Nashville for MSBC next month, and we're looking forward to a great conference, featuring luminaries like talent coaches Steve Reynolds and Randy Lane, along with a great "Star Makers" panel featuring Steve Goldstein, Pat Paxton, Greg Strassell, and other heavy hitters who will talk about what they're looking for in 2009.
While the corporate mission at many broadcasting companies continues to revolve around bottom line budgeting and crisis management, it is still the air studio where radio will either survive this mess or fall apart. Events like MSBC stand out because their goal is to encourage and enable talent to grow and excel – something everyone can agree is a necessary component in radio's long-term future. It's hard to see radio rebounding from its current crises without strong local personalities.
We're excited to be a part of this year's MSBC, and I'll be running a session about how talent can transcend the traditional limitations to better integrate digital tools – like mobile – in shows and sites. We'll also be on hand to talk iPhone applications to jocks, teams, and personalities.
Conventions are on the endangered species list, especially this year, and yet, they provide value in bringing key players in industries together – educationally, and yes, socially. Hopefully, we'll see you at Boot Camp.
