In recent posts, we’ve talked about how broadcast radio might be wise to reassess, repackage, and refocus on the things it does best. Our post about being a “LocaLvore” elicited some great response and comments.
And thanks to a tip from frequent JacoBLOG contributor, Mike Anthony, here’s a little something…literally, little: winning big by acting small.
Now in a world where we’re taught to “Think BIG,” how can a “small ball” approach possibly pay off in a meaningful way, especially in an industry increasingly dominated by big companies with big footprints?
Enter Gary Vaynerchuk – or Gary Vee, a successful blogger, author, speaker, and wine entrepreneur who makes inspirational videos that are often entertaining and insightful.
Below you can watch the entire affair from Meg Whitman to Ninja units, but my takeaway from Gary’s rant is that the radio business should tune into his thinking.

In some way, the old school “take the streets” mentality that many of us were taught the first time we passed out bumper stickers at a van stop could be back in vogue.
Gary talks about developing a small town sensibility, using agile Ninja units that can be innovative, try new things, and look for ways to build and support the brand.
The idea is that every organization needs a little start-up culture, and I can’t think of a better industry for attacking the problems faced by local consumers, local advertisers, and local communities than radio.
We could use a little of that Ninja attitude, don’t you think?
