I’ve just come back from viewing a perceptual study for WMMR/Philadelphia. One of the more amazing findings in the research is the incredible popularity scores for afternoon drive legend, Pierre Robert. Pierre has been on MMR since ’81, and at this point, could be phoning it in. Yet, he stands above all others because of his incredible work ethic, community spirit, and connection with the audience and the music.
P.D. Bill Weston, who has worked with some incredible personalities over the years, knows that Pierre is in a class by himself. He put together the following, a look back at the last 10 days of Pierre Robert’s activity:
- Saturday: Initiates a party for former staffers, John Kubiak and Joe Conklin, presenting a special gold record to Kubiak.
- Wednesday: Raises $10,000 in about 90 minutes auctioning off a Rolling Stones drumhead. The proceeds benefit Philly’s Police Athletic League.
- Thursday: Hosts a Workforce Salute Party for unsung medical workers, making each and every invitee feel like a hero.
- Thursday: Was asked to "interrupt" the sold out Billy Joel concert, walking out in front of 22,000 fans, who immediately acknowledge Pierre with thunderous cheers… And recounts WMMR’s humble contribution to helping start Billy’s career with a bootleg copy of "Captain Jack" circa 1972. As the two stand together, a banner is raised proclaiming 46 sellouts in South Philly. Major coverage with Pierre on the 11 o’clock news.
- Friday: Personally takes a listener and guest to a Soul game (Bon Jovi’s arena football team) and escort them backstage to meet Jon Bon Jovi and have a guitar signed, part of his effort to raise awareness and $5,000 for (former MMR jock) Vinnie the Crumb’s wife medical fund.
- Monday: Live broadcast from Phillies opening day. Interviews scheduled for the week include Harry Shearer and Perry Farrell.
- Tuesday: Hosts personal friends, the Hooters, in the studio to (play live) and announce a special WMMR concert with a special section for mid-1980s era high school graduates who participated in a WMMR ‘Win a Hooters Concert’ contest for your high school.
In addition, Pierre recently finished an 18-month project that collected artwork and memorabilia from MMR’s 37 year history that now decorates the halls of the station. As the old phrase goes, "the harder I work, the luckier I get." In Pierre’s case, MMR is lucky to have an icon of his stature.
