As we’ve seen with PPM qualitative that tracks data from retailers like Kroger grocery stores, Rockers are spending lots of money – and getting little credit from the media buying community. Conventional wisdom dies hard, but when you think about it, isn’t the role of sales management and sales reps to educate buyers, planners, and local clients about the demographic and formatic truths? And wouldn’t it be smart to put together a quiz for buyers about how Alternative fans have higher household incomes than listeners who prefer Classical, Smooth Jazz, Soft AC, and other formats that buyers covet?
When we recommend Alternative to GMs, cluster managers, and owners, and the reply is that these listeners aren’t part of the "money demos," but stats like the above only reinforce how totally out of whack our industry has become. Radio truly has the ability to have broader appeal, spanning demos and musical genres. And the statistics don’t lie – format breadth would make our industry stronger and healthier. And wealthier.
