Welcome to Presidents’ Day – a great excuse for some companies to give their employees a three-day weekend in February. (Not Jacobs Media employees, sad to say.)
So what better way to celebrate this important day but to hear from some Presidents – in this case, Presidents of Radio.
Back in the fall of 2008 at the R&R/NAB Radio Show conferences, our Summit 13 featured a presentation that turned out to be a home run. We selected nine leading industry spokespeople and gave them a bully pulpit to speak out about what they would do to improve the industry if they were to become the President of Radio. That convention occurred just a couple of months earlier than the Obama/McCain election, and it seemed like a good time to hear from some industry leadership.
We had a great group of “candidates” – Gerry Boehme, Pierre Bouvard, Greg Kihn, John Gehron, Larry Rosin, Mike McVay, Jerry Lee, Kid Kraddick, and Erica Farber. Our 10th candidate was chosen from the “radio population” and turned out to be then-night guy at B96/Chicago Julian Nieh.
(By the way, only Rosin, Lee, and Kraddick are in the same jobs they held back in ’08.)
One after the other, they each got up and delivered their stump speeches to a packed, raucous room of Summit attendees. It was a great session, and even though a lot has happened in the last 4+ years, it still resonates in today’s radio environment.
Of the group – and they were all very strong – one stood out. Erica Farber – wearing a plastic tiara – rocked the house with her campaign promises and vision for the industry. There was still an R&R back then, and she ran it.
