Our Director of Digital, Tim Davis, was riveted to Apple’s big announcement yesterday. Here’s his “take” on what is looking to be an exciting end of the year for technology, media, and audio.
Some of the most anticipated tech news of the year focused on yesterday’s announcement of the iPhone 5 with its faster processor, bigger screen, and other improvements. CEO Tim Cook called it “the biggest things to happen to iPhone since iPhone.”
However, despite the growing impact of their own iTunes store for music and other content consumption (Apple announced a major update to iTunes as well), along with the impact that the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad have had in changing our media habits, Apple still felt inclined to bring good old broadcast radio to the party – specifically FM.
Not only did they spotlight the FM tuner in the iPod Nano (which has been there since 2009), but they also announced the updated Live Pause feature – which now has the DVR-like capability of allowing users to rewind 15 minutes, in addition to recording shows and iTunes tagging for desired songs.
And the Apple web site highlighted the inclusion of FM radio in the device along with some of its key benefits. Read the copy below – Erica Farber and Mary Beth Garber couldn’t have written it better. (Of course, when did FM radio become an alternative?)
Even in the midst of one the most anticipated technology announcements of the year from the most valued company in the world, FM radio still managed to snag a special guest role as part of Apple’s revamped lineup. With devices that were for all practical purposes intended to replace traditional radio among consumers, FM radio is not only included in these iPod Nanos, but is also showcased as a featured benefit.

Nice to see Apple is approaching the technology that CCrain has been selling for the past 5+ years. The original Pogo was an MP3 recorder / player with not only an FM tuner but an AM tuner as well.
The CC Witness is the newest replacement and it can also be used as an audio recorder sporting a Mic and Line input. Plus this costs less than the hardly equivilent Apple Ipod product.

I know C. Crane has made nifty products for years and has been big-time supporters of broadcast radio. Clearly, Apple’s announcement makes these features highly top of mind. I will check out the Witness. Thanks so much for commenting, Mike.
