…or thereabouts, that Classic Rock made its debut on the FM band. First time owner, Bob Ottaway took the leap on a Class A in Charlotte (Lansing, Michigan), and the rest, as they say, is history.
Since those humble beginnings, Classic Rock has emerged as the most successful format over the past two decades, with ratings consistently generating revenue for stations in the format. When KRQX first signed on in ’83 on the AM band, thanks to Tom Bender and the Belo management team in Dallas, the belief was that Classic Rock was a "niche format." Today, there are more Classic Rock stations than Active, Mainstream, and Alternative stations combined.
Thanks to Ken Anthony for providing us with a nice 2-part opportunity in R&R to tell the story. Unlike most formats, Classic Rock has transcended radio, and has had impact on advertising, TV, movies, and our culture. It’s been a fun ride, and we thank everyone who has supported us along the way.
We’ve also built a section on our site – www.ik9.5f7.myftpupload.com/crxx – that has more detail and resources.
