One of the ongoing themes we see in focus group after L.A.B. group is the typical station fan wanting to participate. This is why we have been so gung ho about inviting listeners into the process – providing feedback loops, taking their suggestions, and playing them out on the air.
Now comes word that the Jack station in Salt Lake City has begun a feature called "Celebrity Jack," where local luminaries and other famous types can play their favorite hour of music.
So for all you Classic Rock PDs out there, don’t forget why we started doing "Hey, Mom – I’m on WCSX" (and similarly titled features) two decades ago. This was a great idea then – and it’s a great idea now. Bringing listeners into the station, and letting them play an hour of their all-time classics is a great way to make new fans and generate buzz.
This feature always had a "Celebrity Hey Mom" component, where stations would corral local politicians, TV news types, stars from the sports teams, etc. Of course, this takes work to set up. But the residuals are great buzz, community ties, and a reinforcement of the notion that everyone has their favorite classics.
