Yes, I get it. It’s Memorial Day Weekend, a time when we honor the amazing people in the military who have sacrificed for our country in the past and the present. Please take a moment over the weekend to remember why this holiday is so important to all Americans.
I know that most of you will also be involved in family, social, and recreational activities this weekend, too. After all, we all deserve a break – in this case, a long weekend to get some rest, recharge the batteries, and get ready for the challenges that we’ll all face come Tuesday morning.
I’m hoping that you also get a little time to think about something that most broadcasters rarely have time to consider – and that’s innovation.
We’re taking a holiday of our own from our “Radio’s Most Innovative” series, where we devote this space on Friday to showcase those clever and brave souls who had the confidence to launch an idea that truly was innovative. We’ve been shining the light on these courageous broadcasters since last August. From Drs. Demento and Ruth, to NPR One to Podcast One, these posts are designed to remind radio professionals just how much innovation has taken place in the past – and is occurring today.
And along the way, our hope is that these stories are inspirational to those of you with that great idea – maybe the one that’s been bubbling under, the one you meant to mention to your boss, or the one that you’ve seriously considered bringing to market. You can go back into our archives and read about radio innovators here.
In his book, Poke The Box, Seth Godin laments the people who spend their days walking through life with legal pads full of ideas that never see the light of day. Part of the blockage, of course, is fear and ridicule. But the idea of “failing fast” should be an inspiration to you that even the big boys – in technology and radio – fall on their face now and again.
Seth’s directive – to initiate and ship – is worth your consideration this weekend as you think about your place in an exciting industry that has never needed more innovative ideas that it does now.
Let me know if you dream up something.
“Radio’s Most Innovative” will return Friday, May 29th.
