Before my trip to Israel, I sent out a call to some friends to help out with the blog during my travels. Happily, I’ve had a good deal of response and am excited to share some postings over the coming days from guest contributors.
To kick things off, I’d like to Welcome Buzz Knight of Greater Media:
In Thursday July 7th in The Arts section of the NY Times there was a great piece written by Jacques Steinberg about Jim Bell the new 37 year old executive producer of the "Today Show."
The title of the article "For New Man at Today, Puzzles Big and Small" is one that can be placed on many radio stations or high profile morning shows.
The article highlights the fact that it isn’t the "split-second calculations" that are the difficult part of the job it’s finding ways to breathe new life into his big time morning show. One method he also employed involved watching old episodes of "Today" going back as far as 10 years to analyze any areas of opportunity to improve the chemistry of the show. How often have we all gone back to the moments it was all "clicking" for a show to try to figure out the missing element that could be a positive contributor? The biggest thing that Bell pulled from reviewing old tapes was to carve out unscripted time for Matt Lauer and Katie Couric to talk without the benefit of a teleprompter at the end of each hour.
The results in the future battle between "Today" and "GMA" will tell the story about Jim Bell and his legacy but the process is one that has applications for our radio world.
