The news that Clear Channel is launching a project to help unemployed workers in markets they serve is interesting, to say the least. Overall, 21 Clear Channel stations are taking part in this project, which begs the question: Isn't that about 2% of the estimated 900 stations the company owns? That's the best turnout they could muster?
Nonetheless, this bold initiative was press release-worthy. According to CEO John Hogan, "We realize this is a difficult time for many individuals and families and want to support our listeners who are out of work in any way we can. Radio is all about community and serves as the perfect platform to connect job seekers with employers. We hope that job-seeking listeners will take advantage of this special opportunity.” A select handful of listeners will be offered :30 spots to help them find work.
Clear Channel is famous for Newspeak, including the heralded "Less Is More," which is about as relevant today at their stations as cart machines.
Maybe the first step in this initiative would be to help some of the thousands of radio professionals that Clear Channel has laid off find jobs. Then they can move onto the general public.
