Our good friend, Greater Media's Buzz Knight, is spending this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. This puts him in a very small elite group of radio guys, as he discovers what the rest of the world is doing. While news reports from CES describe a more muted environment because of the economy, it's clear that "The Jetson's" are alive and well, and that new offerings, especially as they are related to vehicles and mobile devices, are exciting.
Here are a few of Buzz's reflections about the value of attending an event like CES:
CES should remind all of us about one of the most critical aspects of our jobs, especially in a very difficult year: the importance of networking with new people for new ideas. So often in radio, we have the same conversations with the same people.
The reason that I find people attend the show is not just about cool new gadgets and gizmos; it's to meet new people and make new contacts. Some of my best CES encounters are casual, running into people at sessions or on the convention floor.
One guy from a private equity firm I shared a cab ride with had a great term for it …"business sniffer." It's his way of connecting with new people to gain a better sense of the vibe of opportunity.
This is critical for us all of this year…for our business and for our personal enrichment. TSS – or Time Spent Sniffing – could be a key to all of us learning more about new doors that open. Maybe the next big thing won't come from this…but it's certainly worth some sniffing!
