The research is in. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that the Ford Taurus is the least stolen car in America. Now if you drive one of these cars, you’re happy. You’ve bought a vehicle so bland that not even thieves want them in their driveways.
But if you’re the Ford Motor Company, you have to ask yourself why you’ve continued to make cars so nondescript that no one wants to steal them. The most compelling cars – the ones that sell and are swiped – are attention-getters – like the Cadillac Escalade.
It’s like radio stations. And it’s what happens when you beat the edge, the fun, and the compellingness out of them. No one cares about them or really wants to listen. They’re barely there. And no amount of advertising changes that.
That’s why Ford scrapped the Taurus brand, and has come back with the Fusion and other models that are hopefully more exciting. And maybe, they’ll start getting stolen – a sure sign that Ford’s doing something right.
