In a full-page advertisement in a recent Sunday edition of the New York Times, Yoko Ono implored the world to celebrate the anniversary of her husband’s death as a day of worldwide healing. A nice thought, and one that radio could most definitely embrace.
Over the years, Yoko has become a morning show punchline. You can laugh at her music, you can make fun of her relationship with the remaining Beatles, or you can criticize her fortunes. But Yoko has remained a force in pop culture, and continues to exude the qualities that set her and John apart 35 years ago.
While remembering John with a Beatles A-to-Z has become a typical programming ploy for many stations, perhaps it’s time to change December 8th to a day for charity, radiothons, fundraisers, and community events.
No other musical genre has a figurehead like John Lennon who gave up precious rock n’ roll capital to promote world peace. Turning the grizzly and shocking events of December 8th into a way to promote healing is something that Classic Rock radio ought to be able to embrace.
