Did you hear that sound coming out of New York City last week? That was the writing staff at Saturday Night Live, salivating en masse.
An often so-so SNL has enjoyed its true shining moments across the last 6 years (since the re-count fiasco) when politicos have screwed up, handing the show great material on a silver (or in Dick Cheney’s case, lead) platter. But, if you’re not a regular SNL viewer, you may be one of the many who still said "I have to see SNL, can’t wait to see what they did with this Cheney thing."
So what’s the lesson? Attributes of a great morning show go well beyond "They made me laugh today" or "They’re topical." A key characteristic of the truly habit-forming morning show is listener anticipation. The VP shoots some old lawyer while hunting quail, and fans of the really good shows in your market are instantly wondering how they’re going to handle it tomorrow morning.
Learn from SNL. They may not always hit on all cylinders, but they are known for responding quickly to the big events, creating characters as the need arises, and earning their place near the top of the Monday "Workplace Weekend-Buzz Replay" pecking order. And of course, there’s Leno, Letterman, Conan, and Kimmel – all of whom get to turn this stuff around in one day – just like the great morning shows.
