What an amazing Super Bowl success for the City of Detroit. A good time was had by all – even the media, and the city acquitted itself nicely. There were so many "greatest hits," it’s hard to know where to begin, from Bob Seger joining Kid Rock on stage for "Rock N’ Roll Never Forgets" to the Jerome Bettis story.
But let’s not forget the Stones, and the great job they did at the (in)famous Super Bowl Halftime Show. What is it about these shows that bring out the weird, the memorable, and the heinous? We’ve all laughed at how archaic it was for producers of "The Ed Sullivan Show" to censor the Stones by substituting "time" for "night" in "Let’s Spend the Night Together." Weren’t we old-fashioned and uptight back in the ’60s?
Yet, last night, ABC felt the FCC chill, editing both "Start Me Up" and "Rough Justice." America is obviously not ready to hear "dead man come" – lyrics they’ve heard since 1981 when "Start Me Up" was released. Yet, two hours later, "Gray’s Anatomy" opens with a lesbian shower scene with three of their female stars.
Over the weekend, I heard WCSX playing the "funky kicks" version of "Jet Airliner," and many stations still have "Money" on mothballs because of fear over the audience hearing "bullshit." We have not come very far at all in 40 years. In fact, we have clearly gone backwards.
