A major topic in our hallways is what’s happening with in-vehicle entertainment and information systems. You’re probably tired of me going on and on about my Ford SYNC in my Edge, but the fact is that my vehicle comes with a desktop that provides me with lots of options – not just AM/FM radio and a CD player. If your car doesn’t have one of these systems yet, it will.
We will continue to research the impact of these moving interfaces in Techsurvey 8, the largest study of radio listeners in history is now open to all formats. (If you would like to see how your audience is using technology, media, and gadgets, there’s time to sign up. Click here.)
Toyota is looking down the road, too. Their Entune system is being advertised all over TV right now, but their Fun-Vii concept car goes several steps beyond. It has been referred to as “a smartphone on four wheels” and it’s a rolling glimpse at how today’s smartphone technology, icons, and apps are permeating our daily lives.
But the list goes on because so many products now have the consumer electronics stamp on them – even conventional winter wear. Like these ear muffs that double as headphones for your iPod or smartphone. Or these special gloves that allow you to keep your fingers warm while still being able to successfully send text messages. Winter is not going to stop our enjoyment of gadgets.
It seems like just about every product or brand has to think about how it translates to technology and the appearance of gadgetry and electronics.
At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month, Paul and I will be your eyes and ears, giving you a good look at the hottest new technology and devices. We are hoping that radio gets the message that it can play in this exciting space, and in fact, retrofitting its programming and brands to create a new modern look is part of what it takes to stay front and center in the mind of the consumer.
What happens in Vegas has implications for all of radio.
