Sometimes, it takes a note from a listener to remind us of our mission in the media world. I don’t usually print these missives from audience members, but in this case, I thought you’d find it interesting to get inside the head of a listener. This note came from a listener to The Bay, Shamrock’s Baltimore-based Classic Rock station:
Dear people at The Bay,
I wanted to express our thanks for a few things that happened yesterday. I was listening to The Bay as I was driving to Best Buy to purchase an XM receiver for my car when I heard the DJ wish my wife a ‘happy birthday’ on the radio. My cell phone rang a few minutes later and it was a friend of mine saying that he heard the DJ as well and thought that it was really something, etc. My wife than called and was very excited as well. After I was done talking to her I realized that I had been thoroughly enjoying the music and the DJ on The Bay for over an hour.
That’s when it hit me. I didn’t need XM at all. With XM, I would be able to get the same music and no commercials, but I would have missed out on hearing my wife’s birthday announcement and all of the other local stuff and music info that the DJ talked about. Also, my wife would never have been able to call and talk to a live person at XM, let alone have them play a request. I think that your station plays the best music around and your DJs are terrific. Thank you for making my wife a happy woman yesterday and for showing me the light in regards to XM.
I couldn’t have said it better. Happy holidays from your friends at Jacobs Media.
