Last week, we posted an article about the expected strong sales of smartphones and smart speaker heading into the holiday buying frenzy. The opportunity we outlined was for radio to get out in front of the “smart” onslaught by making sure to put promos for apps and smart speaker “skills” into hot rotation as consumers began to unwrap their electronic gifts.
Now, a story from 9-t0-5 Mac.com confirms the phenomenon we call the “download deluge.” Noting that Amazon’s Alexa led the league in downloads, all signs point to super-robust sales and corresponding usage these past few days. By the way, the Google Home app reached the Top 10 as well.
Yes, it’s about content and distribution. But it’s also about timing – being in the moment and having that sense of the consumer and pop culture. The holiday season is the best time to promote your apps and your “skills” (if you were prescient enough to develop them this year).
That’s another reason why we so strongly recommend radio stations participate in Techsurvey 2018, the best way to understand the tech environment and the way it impacts formats and audiences.
