Among the many quick-hitting presentations at this week’s “140 Characters Conference” in downtown Detroit was one that really had nothing much to do with Twitter – at least directly.
It was a brief but impactful session from Mark Ostach, CEO and Founder of MyMentalSpace.com, “an online tool that allows people to self-monitor their Internet behaviors…” Mark is a graduate of Walsh College here in the Detroit area and dreamed up this idea while a student there.
Detroit is a city that is rebooting itself one person and one company at a time. One of my personal takeaways from these mini-talks and panels is just how many newly minted entrepreneurs there are in Motown.
So as necessity is indeed the mother of invention, many young, spirited Detroiters are finding ways to make a living. In Ostach’s case, he’s delving into the dark world of Internet addiction.
His appeal was interesting, right in the heart of an online/social media conference. But his message came through loud and clear, aided by a clever little video that I’ve linked to below.

We saw a similar theme in “Goin’ Mobile,” as many of our respondents readily admitted they are indeed addicted to their smartphones. Now along comes this video that might get you thinking.
Hopefully, you’re reading this on Friday, heading into what will hopefully be a nice weekend for you. That’s probably the best time to get your head around your Internet usage. As Mark reminds us, "This is about staying connected online while staying connected to your own life.”
A little self-examination never hurt anyone.
Talk to you on Monday.
