You’d think that during a long Memorial Day Weekend, there would be no shortage of great movies to see. But like the record industry, there are "issues" in movieland, too. After my 16 year-old son came home from "Pirates 3," declaring that it "sucked" and was 45 minutes longer than necessary, my hopes for a great movie experience over the weekend dwindled. After all, he loves the "Pirates" series, and counts Johnny Depp as one of his favorites.
And when you look at the movie listings, and note that most of the big releases – "Pirates," "Shrek," "Spider Man" – all end with a "3," maybe there’s something up. Because once you get beyond "The Godfather," the concept of great movies and a "3" in the title doesn’t bode well.
But then I remembered hearing a great story on NPR’s "Morning Edition" the other day about a new indie film called "Once." It charmed at Sundance, and is music-centric. So I trusted NPR and took a shot.
Risk rewarded. This is a great little film, set in charming Dublin. It will renew your love for music and movies. If you’re living in a city that doesn’t typically get these films, you may have to wait for NetFlix or Blockbuster to see it. But this one’s worth the admission, and you can bet they won’t make a cheesy sequel.
