My career in broadcasting spans back to college radio, old vinyl, and long days fixing archaic mixing boards and engineering gear. Ironically those early days led me towards becoming a technology professional where designing, building and maintaining entire digital infrastructures was my norm for more than twenty years.
While cool gear will always come and go, my love for broadcasting remains, finding it's sweet spot in Jazz where I've programmed just about every aspect of this uniquely creative art form.
Staring at WWOZ as a volunteer in the early 80's I went on to program for WRUR (Rochester, NY), WMBR (Cambridge, MA), KMHD (Portland, OR), SoulandJazz.com and currently on my own platform, 33third.org. Currently my programming includes two shows and artist spotlight series on Jazz musicians from around the world, and a series of written work ranging from album reviews to essays on musicians and their creative practices. As an independent producer, I'm also comfortable researching and writing for a variety of portico routines, as well as tackling branding and marketing strategies that can include branding, multimedia presentations, content management and scheduling systems and social media strategies, that are all now part of positioning content online.
Recognizing the ongoing power of story telling, exploring innovative narratives, knowing an audience and managing style with sales strategies, are all part of how I approach every aspect of my programming. In 2018 I conducted a three month research project for JazzWeek that unpacked how radio needs to adapt to disruptive technologies. The findings showcased the rapid integration of everything from mobile devices and smart speakers, to entirely new communication paradigms for young and old audiences alike. The report also spoke to the resilient power of radio, and the compelling nature of the spoken word; a tradition I'm proud to be a part of and excited to re imagine for a new generation of listeners.
