"Peopletizing" (9.02.08)

"Peopletizing"

"Peopletizing" is one of the easiest things you can do - and it can have a huge impact on your audience.

Simply solicit comments from listeners about the station -about jocks, contests, music, memories, etc, - and then use the listener's picture and their comments as sidebars or banners throughout your site.  Much like putting listeners on the air, this effort makes your audience feel more connected to the station (and Web site) and also gives you the benefit of positive word of mouth.  Set up a dozen or more to rotate throughout the site so they don't get stale.  Another twist is the "Workforce Employee of the Day" - while it's not as gratuitous in terms of compliments and self-promotion, it is a way to get a listener's name and face on your site 365 days a year and freshen the Workforce contest.

Taking it a step further, KIHT/St. Louis, each year, celebrates "Steve Loomstein Day" - it's an opportunity to single out a vocal, passionate listener and honor them.  They dress up the site with his image and name ("Steve 96"), Photshop his face into band logos, and essentially give him free-reign over programming for the day.  This is a day that's totally "peopletized" around Loomstein.

Fun & Games (9.08.08)

WTDA Games

Custom games, time-wasters on your site, or even links to external sources are all draws for more traffic to your site.

A great example comes from the BJ Shea morning show (KISW) where they've created a (PG-rated) Strip Poker game with the rock girls.  Custom games can be pricey, but there are some sites that will co-brand games for little, or no, charge.  One site, www.mega-quiz.com, offers great "excel-type" quizzes that your audience can download or play through your site, that are music-trivia focused.

For co-branded games check out pictogames.com  and dailyfreegames.com among many others.

TTime-wasters (games in flash that are easily embedded) or links to gaming sites are plentiful.  Look for a solution that will give you reciprocal traffic, or even an affiliate program with a "pay per click" for traffic you refer through to them.

Citizen Reporters (9.15.08)

You Report

Conceptually, it's simple:  Have your listeners upload audio, video, or photos to your site whenever they experience breaking news (sports, pop-culture, weather, etc.).  It brings your audience's content into your space and creates not only sticky, but viral opportunities to grow your site.

Executing this type of feature on your site could be complicated without the proper resources, but you can also use third party solutions Flicker, Viddler, Eye-Fi, Stickam, Kyte, - even YouTube - among others as a way to get it done.

Music Stores (9.22.08)

Music Stores

For music-based stations, there's really no stronger application from an eCommerce standpoint than a music store.  While you may not make a killing, the added value and benefits to your audience more than justify the effort.

There's a number of ways to go - most importantly is to integrate the store with your "Now Playing" feature (with archives dating back at least several days).  Stores and sales are available from iTunes, Tune Genie, Jump2Go, Yes.net, and Amazon.com.  Don't just go for the highest affiliate rate, look for what will be trusted by your audience and most likely to spotlight or specialize in music related to your format..

Elf, Mullet, or Bobble-Yourself (9.29.08)

____ Yourself!

Simple, fun and can generate huge traffic.  Jack in LA had fun doing this feature using mullets,, and the MLB, with XM, put together a bobble-head feature.  Granted, the "Elf/Scrooge Yourself" feature is a bit more encompassing, and can require some significant resources, but that very feature put Office Max, an otherwise staid web adjunct to a brick-and-mortar outlet, into the Top 10 Web sites in terms of traffic last December.  So, they would undoubtedly consider it to be worth the expense.  And don't forget the Simpsonize Me site, another great interactive/viral campaign along these lines.

Always require a sign-up to your database to participate - and be certain that the viral elements are in place (email/suggest to a friend-type feature).  Share the application with bloggers and message boards to get some organic growth as well.

These can be as simple as repurposing a "sign generator" and allowing uploads of photos or other material.  Dozens of open-source applications along these lines are readily available that could be repurposed quite easily.  Another option is to have listeners submit their photos and simply insert them into a template yourself (using Photoshop, Fireworks, Corel Draw, etc.)
